Serial Killer Mafia was a game designed and hosted by Yuli based on original design.
It began on April 12th, 2011 and ended in a Baddie win in D4 (April 21st, 2011).
Game Mechanics
This was a 8 vs 3 vs 1 classical 3-Faction Mafia with a lot of twists: goodies being able to discover clues about the killers or RID Guess to match potential killers with their victims.
Rules
- Order of Actions: RID kill > RID guess > Trap > NK (cannot be blocked) > Block > Info Gathering (Spies, discovering traits) > Vote manip (cannot be blocked)
- During sign-ups, all players are required to PM to the host the following: a handedness (R or L), height (in inches), and weight (in pounds).
- Weight must be between 130 and 230 lbs (inclusive) and divisible by 5.
- Height must be between 60-72 inches (inclusive), and must be a whole number.
- Handedness must be Left or Right. No ambidexterity here.
- Traps act like three actions in one.
- A block (stops the trapped player from acting)
- A save (stops the trapped player from being killed)
- A guard (prevents the trapped player from being spied)
When you trap a player, you do all of these things (plus keep them quiet the next day). Since the Night Kill cannot be blocked, that part of the trap is not ignored (any other action by that player doesn't happen), but it's disregarded in relation to the Night Kill.
- The Yuli Addendum: Any player who publicly outs his role will lose his ability for the following night and have one additional vote on him every day for the rest of the game.
- Weekends are counted as half days.
Role Description
The Police Force (and friends) -- WINCON: Eliminate the Serial Killers
- Detective -- Follows clues left by the killers. He may trail one player per night and discover his faction. (faction spy)
- Inspector--Follows a player each night and discovers their handedness, height, and weight. The Inspector has BTSC with the Investigator as long as the Errand Boy is alive.
- Investigator--Uses his skill set to discover one trait related to the killer of the current night's victim (random). He also chooses a previous target of the night kill and discovers the handedness, height, or weight (his choice) of the player who killed him. He cannot do this for lynch victims. He gets one piece of information from each murder (including Indy RID kill) every night. The Investigator has BTSC with the Inspector as long as the Errand Boy is alive.
- Police--May put one player in jail every night. They must stay there until the next night. (Night/Day trap)
- Forensic Scientist--Compares DNA from the crime scene against known suspects. He gets one RID guess for every unsolved* night kill. The RID guess may only be used on Killer 1, 2, or 3 (whichever performed that Night Kill). A night kill is considered unsolved for as long as the Forensic scientist has not discovered which one did it.
- Journalist--May correspond with the public by adding up to 250 characters (short) to the night post and 500 characters to the day post (long), but can never publish two messages in the same cycle.
- Insider--He secretly works for the Journalist undercover at a clerical position inside the police station. As long as the Insider is alive, the Journalist gets any information that the Investigator discovers. Because of his ties to the media, he can make his vote count as x1 or x2.
- Errand Boy--Delivers sealed messages between the Inspector to the Investigator. As long as the Errand Boy is alive, those two have BTSC. The Errand Boy cannot read the messages, however, so he does not get BTSC. He is often overlooked, however, and may make his vote count as x0 or x1.
The Serial Killers--BTSC and Night Kill--WINCON: Be in Majority
At the beggining of the game, the Killers will select a name for themselves. Their "killer" names will be announced in the day 0 post (along with which one is which role). No killer may carry out the NK more than twice, unless all of the alive killers have carried it out twice.
- Killer 1--The Guinness Killer--Blocks one target per night
- Killer 2--The Jack of Spades--Spies one target per night
- Killer 3--Phaze--Self vote manipulation. May alter his own vote to count as x0, x1, or x2.
The Vigilante--WINCON: Kill at least 1 Serial Killer, but outlive them all. If the killers are dead and the Vigilante is alive, the Vigilante wins (but the goodies don't) if the Vigilante has killed at least one of them. He gets one RID kill per night. If spied by the detective, he will appear as a Killer. If spied by the Killers, he will appear as the Police.
Host's Summary
Game Idea and Expectations
There were many role groupings that worked together in this game. Naturally, the host expected some of them to be cut early, but the game was a test run of how a large group of limited information gatherers (in lieu of a single role spy) can work together to discover the identities of the Mafia.
Game
Special commendations
Mostly considered luck, all three of Shadow7's traps targeted each Killer in succession. While the first established Onetruth as the Guinness Killer, the other two only had the hindering effect of keeping Araver and DarthMask from voting (and being lynched) the following day.
Host disappointments
As with any game that ends in a coin toss, the losing team likely feels cheated. However, several blunders by the Police (and Friends) faction could have been avoided during several of the days.
Alternate endings
Coinflips. With the Night Sniper removed from the game in Night 2, the only alternate ending to a Killer victory was a win by the Police. Due to tie lynch rules, however, the vote favoured the Killers and gave them a 75% chance to win the coin toss(es).
Winning Faction
Baddies
- Onetruth as "The Guiness Killer"
- Araver as "Phaze"
- DarthMask as "Jack of Spades"

Day 0 -- Introductions |
---|
Metro City had descended into chaos. What was once a peaceful town was menaced by lawless thugs and crime lords. All of that was a long time ago, though. Several years ago, the police had given up all hope. But one masked person stood against the hordes of mobsters and put an end to the chaos. Men and women around the city spoke of him, but only in hushed tones. Nobody had ever seen him before. His work was clean and perfect, bringing vigilante justice to the city.
The press called him Night Sniper because of his deadly accuracy that only ever struck at night. For many years the police were bound by duty to capture the Night Sniper, but none of them actually wanted to... ---Ten Years Later...--- "Another homicide last night, Chief," the desk sergeant said. "Another Jack of Spades on the corpse, too. The new DA's gonna have our hide." "I know," the Chief replied. "I think it's about time we call in the Investigator..." "What's that?" the Journalist asked, removing the pen from behind his ear. A notepad appeared in the other hand and he was poised to write. "Are the Police calling in an ousider?" The Chief grunted his disapproval of the Journalist. "Off the record, the Inspector is great at what he does. Better than anyone I ever seen. For the record," the Chief paused and sighed, "Go to hell." The Journalist looked slightly confused, but took it as a cue to sit down and be quiet. He looked over his shoulder every once in awhile and caught the eye of the desk sergeant. Nobody else knew that the desk seargeant was an Insider working for the journalist. "Detective!" the Chief yelled across the room, "Get the Inspector on the phone." The Investigator and Inspector were ready before the phone rang. They had seen the news and knew that it would come down to them. There were a string of organised murders that had been haunting the city as of late. The Mayor and the DA were killed just last week, each with an empty Guinness bottle in their hand. Last night was Judge Thompson. These guys prefered people in power or public eye. The Inspector decided to head to the scene. The Investigator went in the opposite direction toward the police station, a small boy trailing behind him. When he arrived at the station, the Chief showed him around needlessly. Both the Inspector and the Investigator had been there many times. "I hear you have a new forensic lab," the Investigator said as a half question. "Yeah, sure," the Chief said. "Here's the address," he added, writing it down for him. The Investigator looked at it for a short second, then handed it to the Errand Boy beside him. "Run this to the Inspector." "Yes, sir," the boy replied. The Night Sniper snapped the clasps on his case and shrugged the strap over his shoulder. He walked out of his small apartment leaving only the faint glow of the television in the corner. "...after another gruesome murder. The police haven't released any information about whether it was related to the Phaze murders of last week, but an Insider has leaked that another Jack of Spades was left at the scene. Parents are advised to keep their children indoors and to lock their house during the night. Bob, back to you." |
Night 1 |
---|
The call came early, but the Inspector was ready for it. He had everything packed and set out. The Inspector hit the streets and started eyeing people in the area. The call came from Marquette Street twenty minutes ago, he thought to himself. The killer could be anywhere. As a man passed him, the Inspector took note of his features and kept walking.
Meanwhile, the Investigator was at the crime scene. The place was a bloody mess, with entrails and blood splattered everywhere. On one wall, the words You've Been Phazed were written in blood. The Investigator recognised the deceased as Blahblah. "Poor Blahblah," he sighed. As he looked into the dead man's eyes, he noticed something about the scene. He jotted it down and took off to find his partner. The Jack of Spades was prowling. He was looking, looking, ever looking for his perfect Ace. The One Person Who Would Earn Him Fame. It was his delight and he dwelt on it every waking moment. He saw someone come from 'round a corner and tucked himself back into the shadows. As the person passed, the Jack stepped out and silently followed him. The Police were out on the streets, looking for anyone suspicious. They prowled alleys and side streets. Eventually, the found Onetruth and picked her up. At gunpoint, she got in the back of the car and took a ride downtown. The Detective was also on the hunt tonight. He lurked quietly in the shadows and just observed, as he always did. |
Day 1 -- Justice and Reckoning |
---|
An anonymous tip from the Crime Lords led everyone to a local casino where all the Crime Lords watched. They had placed the killers there and told them to do their worst.
The Killers waited in a dark room several floors below the ground. The Chief led the way, following the instructions of the tip. When they all arrived in the room, the door closed behind them followed by a metallic thunk of the lock sliding home. The Killers had planned for days and this was the moment of truth. They killed the lights and entered the room through the only other door available. "It's a trap!" the Chief called. Blindly, everyone groped around. "Ugh!" someone screamed, followed by the thud of the body hitting the floor. Footsteps echoed back as the Killers fled the room and closed the door, making their escape. Someone finally found the lights, but it was too late. Maurice was dead. The Detective would do no more detectiving. |
Night 2 -- The Trouble with Traps |
---|
The Night Sniper sat at the top of a tall building in downtown Metro City He waited. And waited. His clothes were soaked from the rain that had stopped no more than ten minutes ago. Still he waited. His patience paid off after he finally saw the person he wanted to see.
He opened the case at his feet, withdrew his rifle, took aim, and fired. Half a mile away, Onetruth didn't feel or hear or see any of it. She was dead before she hit the ground. The Police were out and about still looking for suspicious people. They visited half a dozen Irish bars, but came up empty handed. They settled on a guy walking down the street. When the Police pulled up to the curb beside him, they got a look at each other. "Can I help you?" Araver asked politely. "You sure can, son," one of the officers replied. "You wanna come take a ride with us?" Araver knew he didn't have a choice. He took a ride. The Jack of Spades disapproved of the way things were going. He felt like a pawn in some old man's chess game. He decided to follow people until he was satisfied. JarZe was wandering the streets. It had been a long day and he was tired. He was going home and going to bed, as his mind kept telling him. He unlocked the door to his home and walked inside. When he made his way to the kitchen, he stopped. "It's too late," Phaze said, stepping out of a shadow. "I gotcha!" In his exhaustion, JarZe was no match for him. The Investigator and Inspector were as busy as they had ever been. They were still trying to deduce who had done what, but it started to seem a little overwhelming... |
Day 2 -- Accidents |
---|
The Killers were smart enough to not pitch the same idea twice, since the entire force would be expecting that. So the anonymous tip went out, but no ambush was set. The Chief made his way to the casino again and everyone found the place to be empty. It was Sunday night and the place was closed.
"You have got to be kidding me," the Chief said. "They're wasting our time." After a general musing, everyone made their way back to the police station. When they had all arrived, the lights went out. "Aw, not again," the Chief sighed. He knew he couldn't die because his name wasn't blue, but the whole process still agitated him. After much scurrying and quick jabs and grunts, the lights came back on and everyone looked around. Segul was lying in a pool of blood. "Oh, God," he muttered, looking up at the Chief. "Why me?" What was the Forensic Scientist doing in the station? Why wasn't he at his lab? What would befall our heroes the following night? |
Night 3 -- Walking the Beat |
---|
The Police were walking the beat on high alert. The city was in utter chaos. Where is the Night Sniper? they all wondered, but nobody spoke. It was a calm night, the kind of calm that precedes the worst of storms. The calm spoke volumes, but not nearly as much as the immense silence of the town. There were no cars. There were no pedestrians. All were advised--no, ordered--to stay inside. The temporary mayor had recently imposed a curfew and all were required to follow it. The governor was a hair's breadth from declaring martial law. So when the Police saw DarthMask wandering after curfew, they had no choice but to arrest him.
The Inspector hated curfew. Sure, he was clear to walk the streets if he had his ID on him, but the idea of every officer on alert sent chills down his spine. They had better not shoot me, he mused as he left his house in search of someone. Not very long after he left, his cell rang. He picked it up, knowing it was going to be bad news. He listened for awhile, then wrote down an address. "I'll be right over," he said, closing his phone and replacing it on his belt. "Gods..." He arrived at the address he had written down and looked up at the neon sign that indicated that the place was normally filled with women and stagnant smoke. He went inside and took a look around. There were officers all over the place, but tied to a pole on stage was Glycereine. He had been dressed formally and beaten to death. The Inspector's attention to detail allowed him to see that Glycereine had clearly been modeled after the Jack of Spades. |
Day 3 -- Whipping Boy |
---|
The rain whipped sideways and stung whatever it touched. The cold wind coupled with the rain made anyone about during the day shiver. EDM pulled her coat closer around her and walked down the street. The letter in her pocket was soaked through, but she knew she wasn't supposed to read it. She had to make it to the other end of town as soon as possible. She had to keep moving. She had to.
But the wind worked against her and eventually she ducked into an alley to escape it. Toward the center of the alley were some hobos gathered around a burning barrel. She approached and stood near the fire, not making eye contact with any of them. "Well, hello there," one of the hobos said warmly. "Hello," she replied and looked at the man. She knew his face--in a manner of speaking. Panic rushed over her and the hobos recognised it and smiled. "Put her in the barrel, boys," the Jack of Spades said. Hands grasped at her and she was too numb from both the wind and panic to fight it. One of the hobos did her the kindness of killing her before she was burned. As her body was stuffed into the barrel, the letter slipped out of her pocket. In golden script across the paper were the letters "I&I". The letter would never be delivered. Their line of communication was dissolved. |
Night 4 -- The Sewers |
---|
Shadow was hot on the trail of the Killers. She knew where they were hiding, down in the sewers. There was no apparent reason for her to know the sewers, but she navigated them flawlessly. Eventually, she stepped out of a pipe and into a room converted into an office. The Jack of Spades spun 'round in his chair to face her.
"I'm not surprised you found me here," he said. "I can be clever," she said. "I see." He paused and stood up. "But you've failed to take into account that I knew you were coming." Shadow had not, in fact, failed to take this into account. She was bugged and feeding everything to the station downtown. She smiled. The Jack of Spades saw the smile and knew he'd been bested. He took a pair of handcuffs off the desk and put them on behind his back. "You can take me," he said, defeated. "It was a good run while it lasted..." Shadow walked over confidently and grabbed him by his arm, pulling him back toward the sewer. "Oh, I forgot something," the Jack of Spades said. "What?" she asked hesitantly. "Your phone is ringing," he said with a smile. Sure enough, a few seconds later, her phone buzzed. She looked at the Jack confused, but answered the phone. Heat... The real Jack of Spades watched all of this on a series of cameras from a remote location, right up to Shadow answering her phone and the screens going black. He even heard the explosion a few seconds later, coming from the other side of town. "Oh, Metro City," he mused. "All of your citizens are fit followers, right down to the martyrdom..." The Inspector was in the station and got the feed from Shadow's bugs. He knew where to go to ask about the sewer. Sure enough, he stopped by a local bar and spoke with the bartender, one of his many contacts. "Did you see anyone...." The conversation went on for a bit, but the Inspector eventually got what he wanted. And something he didn't. The bartender handed him an envelope labeled "I&I" in gold script. He opened it hastily and read it silently. Dear Sir, Please stop chasing us. If you would like to meet, we will be at the Metro City Metro at the end of the day. Please allow us to end this peacefully. Sincerely, The Killers The Inspector knew it was a trap, but he had to go along with it. He rushed back to the station to muster whoever was left. The Chief approached him as soon as he entered. "We're going to Overton Park. Are you coming?" the Chief asked. "I don't have much of a choice," he said... |
Day 4 - A meeting in the park |
---|
The sun was setting on another day in Metro City. Here in the Metro City Metro, old men played chess and pedestrians walked hither and thither trying to catch their train. It was, once upon a time, Overton Park, where children played hide and seek and old men played chess. The children could no longer play when the Metro was built, but the old men didn't have any place else to go. So while most of the city called it the Metro, the aged generations still called it Overton Park. What remained of the crippled police force arrived, led by the Inspector. On the other side of what remained of the park, Phaze waved them over. "Hello, gentlemen," Phaze said. "It's been a long time a-comin', eh?" "You killed my partner," the Inspector said casually. "He had it comin'," Phaze said. Lightning fast, the Inspector drew a .45 and shot Phaze in the chest, sending him sprawling to the ground. Vine looked at Hirkala and nodded. "It's over," she said, looking at DM, who had just crossed the street. "Okay," DM said, raising his hands. "I give up!" "It's almost over," the Chief said. "I heard a rumour that Vine's been passing information to the media." Hirkala looked at the Chief in disbelief. "Can't we handle that later? Clearly these murderers are more important." "Maybe," the Chief said. "But I can't stand someone who pretends to be something he isn't." He reached into his coat, pulled a pistol, and shot Vine in the head. Hirkala looked at him in disbelief, but the Chief just smiled. "You've gotta cut out the cancer before it grows too large, Inspector." Phaze rolled over and started to stand. "That really hurts," he said, rubbing his chest. There was no blood, just a hole in his shirt that he casually noticed. "I'm gonna need a new smock, too." "Smock?" the Jack of Spades asked. "Yes," Phaze said. "It's a smock." "Boys," the Chief chided, "We still have a job to do. Finish Hirkala." "Sure thing, boss," they said in unison and looked around. "Uh, where'd he go?" Hirkala was nowhere in sight. --- The sun set and the Inspector was running, putting as much distance between himself and the maniacs as possible. How could they get the better of me? he wondered. He cursed himself for not seeing it sooner. The Chief had known where they were going. He had set it up. The Inspector ducked into an alley and caught his breath. He looked up and saw the brick building above him had lost its upper floors. Sneaking about, the Inspector found his way in and up and hid there for a few hours. After awhile, his curiosity got the best of him and he started going through some of the charred rubble. After a bit of digging, he found a locked case marked "NS". After quickly picking the lock, the Inspector opened the case... To be continued? |
