Content for the first page discussionEdit

Well, back when I reformatted the Main Page from the default Wikia one, I added boxes with things that were on the wiki and big pictures as opposed to things that were still in progress. Now as there is more content over the wiki, the need for such big pictures has kinda faded. And some of the text (e.g. the Brando Awards) has become too specific for the scope of a main page. I'm thinking of adding:

  • a smaller grid based navigation menu using expanded tooltips (I've added CSS for wikia.css, I still need to do small pictures) instead of the big Quick Access slideshow. DONE
  • some dynamic content if possible, not necessarily a random page, perhaps leveraging a DynamicPageList to get some nice pages from the site *shrug* MISSING
  • moving the games slideshow to a separate page, and add it by transclusion in the right column. DONE

And mostly, include content in the Main Page by transclusion e.g. the Updates and Notices - it's just a matter of moving the onlyinclude tag up when you add more news, so that it does not get too long on the page What do you think? Araver 21:09, May 18, 2011 (UTC)

Yuli's notes:  The less static, the easier it is to update throughout, especially bigger items. Bot can go around and make little edits for formatting and categories, but I'd hate to try something harder (page creation isn't so deletion or population is a bit harder). So for scalability, yes. Awesome. -Brought to you in whole by Molly Mae 21:59, May 18, 2011 (UTC)
I've added some wiki-community updates in the right column instead of the static Brando announcement. Revisiting the above discussion, should we request from Wikia to enable the DynamicPageList extenstion to add content on the first page? I don't really have a clear use in mind, just that the page is mostly static. *sigh* I keep forgetting where stuff is ... something semi-random would push more subjects on the main page I guess. We could get it enabled and mess around with it. The biggest problem I see is the large assortment of unpopulated pages. Brought to you in whole by Molly Mae 18:23, June 14, 2011 (UTC)
Makes perfect sense. We'll revisit this after Eras are pop'd Araver 05:01, June 17, 2011 (UTC)
